Built on 3 acres of common landknown as Handville Green in 1796 for the poor people of the parish. Thebuilding remained as a poorhouse until 1828 when it transferred to privateownership. At this point the outhouses were converted into cottages, one ofthese being used as a bakery and another as a beer shop. One part of what isnow the restaurant was used as a chapel by the Wesleyan Methodists. Named asWaltham Court in 1909 the house remained as a private residence, survivingthe 2nd World War when it was taken over by the army and the garden turnedinto a potato field in 1985 it openedas a restaurant with rooms. Furthersubstantial investment has converted Waltham Court into a fine small, qualityHotel and Restaurant as it stands today.
